CON*tourage announces new MONTHLY PHOTO CON*test!

CON*tourage is super excited to announce a new fun way our fans can get involved monthly…visually….creatively…and win prizes along the way!

This monthly contest is a no-brainer and doesn’t really take much planning…if any at all. You don’t have to be a professional photographer by any means. You don’t have to own or have access to a expensive-as-all-get-out camera with lots of settings. Hell, this might be the first photo you’ve ever submitted to a contest! If you have access to a cell phone camera or a simple point-and-shoot camera then you are good to go. And yes….Instagram photos are do-able too!

The ONE requirement that you will need to include in your photo is the word CON*tourage….that’s it! You can do that several ways:
1.) If you have a CON*tourage t-shirt — wear it in the photo.
2.) Print out the CON*tourage logo HERE (.pdf file) and show it in the photo in some way.
3.) Write the word CON*tourage on yourself (or an object) and have it appear in the photo.

What does the photo need to be of or show? ANYTHING! Be creative…take chances….anything goes! Going out clubbing with your friends? Planning on hanging with a celebrity? Scaling Mt. Everest? Traveling to a foreign country? Found a funny/interesting setting for a photo? Feeling nerdy, sexy or a maybe little naughty? In the middle of no where, all alone and the sights are killer? Bachelor Party in Vegas? Really…ANYTHING GOES as long as the word CON*tourage is in the photo.

Sure…this is a damn easy and fun contest but there are GUIDELINES / DEADLINES so read on!
DEADLINE for submitting a photo is the last day of each month (11:59 p.m.).
EMAIL the photo (.jpg preferred) to: contourage@gmail.com
• In the EMAIL SUBJECT please put “Photo Contest Entry”
• In the email put your FIRST NAME and LOCATION and a short description/write-up about the photo. If there are several people in the photo, feel free to include their names also. Say as much or as little as you want.
• Each photo can only be submitted ONE TIME so if you don’t win one month, try something different the next month.
• You CAN submit more than one entry per month BUT photos must be different. (i.e. Don’t submit the same photo from just different camera angles. Who knows…one night out of the town might get you numerous photos as the evening develops!) Quality over quantity, friends!
• The word/logo CON*tourage must be “in” the original photo and not added afterwards with a photo editing program (i.e. via Photoshop)
• NOTE: CON*tourage reserves the right to post, edit, and/or reproduce any photos submitted for contest. Photos submitted may possibly be featured during future CON*tourage parties/events.

MONTLY PRIZES:
Leading up to Dragon*Con 2012, monthly winners will receive a PAIR of CON*tourage VIP PARTY PASSES (21+) to our Dragon*Con 2012 events (FYI, we SOLD OUT well over a month before Dragon*Con 2011 so these VIP Passes will be a hot item).  If you are one of the lucky monthy winners but don’t plan on attending Dragon*Con 2012 let us know and you can:
A.) Transfer your VIP Passes to someone else (21+)
B.) We’ll give you another kick-ass prize instead.

After Dragon*Con passes, we’ll change up the montly prizes. Photo Winners will also have bragging rights with photol be posted online for future viewing purposes.

REMEMBER…ANYTHING GOES!! Email monthly entries to: contourage@gmail.com

“REVENGE OF THE SITH” novelist to be CELEBRITY GUEST at CON*tourage Parties during DRAGON*CON 2011!

With less than 3 days before DRAGON*CON, CON*tourage is excited to announce that Matthew Stover, a New York Time Best Selling novelist, will be a celebrity guest at their events. Stover is the man behind the words for the novelization of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and other Star Wars novels.

Matthew Stover is a New York Times Best Selling Novelist

A little more about our celebrity guest: Matthew Stover is an American fantasy and science fiction New York Times Best Selling novelist. He graduated in 1983 from Drake University and settled in Chicago. He is an avid martial artist and a student of the Degerberg Blend, a Jeet Kune Do concept that mixes approximately twenty-five different fighting arts from around the world. This combat style influences the way Stover writes his fight scenes, for which he has won considerable acclaim. He is perhaps best known for his four Star Wars novels, including the novelization of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. He has also written three science-fiction/fantasy hybrid stories featuring a hero named Caine: Heroes Die, Blade of Tyshalle, and Caine Black Knife, with a fourth Caine’s Law planned for release in 2012. Here is Stover’s page on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Stover

Stover’s latest project is ”OverWorld: The Chronicles of Ankhana.” Find out more about this project here: http://overworld.tv/

If you make it out to our parties, be sure to come up to Matt, introduce yourself and let’s make him feel welcomed…as he’s new to this whole “CON*tourage thing.” And if you are a fan of PUNK….you’ve already got something in common with him! Costuming as Art and Obsession

Superhero Costumers at Megacon In Orlando, Florida

I wanted to write an article about one of my hobbies. It’s called costuming. A quick description, for those of you who may only consider wearing a costume on Halloween, or perhaps never, is its a hobby about collecting and wearing costumes at conventions and parties, sometimes replicas of favorite movie and TV icons. Alien and Predator are good examples, or it could be historical replicas of say Civil War Soldiers or Pirates of The Caribbean or Super Heroes or What have you. Costuming as a hobby is as wide and varied as the imagination can go.

One starts out costuming like this. You accidentally attend a science-fiction convention with a friend and have a great time walking around looking at all the great costumes and you think, wow, I can come back here next year and wear one too. So maybe you purchase a black cloak, and next year you come to that same con (because hey, you had so much fun last year)  as a vampire with some black clothes you already had, some white makeup you borrowed from your sister and the cloak you bought a year ago. And so you walk around, and your having a great time fitting in, but then you think… gee it would be cool to have some awesome boots like the ones I saw that other person wearing,  and that sword I saw in the dealers room and some honest to goodness real fangs…..and before you know it your working on your 10th costume.

The actual act of building a costume can be as much fun, and more fun in some cases, than actually parading around in it. The hobby part of costuming can be as deep or as lightweight as you want. You can simply research and purchase seperate items that will be combined as a final costume, this being the easiest and fastest way, but can also be the most expensive. Many costumers opt or even prefer to make every part of thier costumes themselves, which is more time consuming but cheaper.

The best example may be the Star Wars Storm Trooper. A deluxe outfit can run you in excess of $2,000, however you can make a decent one yourself for free out of cardboard, and many people have done this to terrific effect. The process can be uplifting and frustrating in a way that only labors of love in the artistic world are. I have been costuming for the past 10 years and I have only scratched the surface of hardcore costuming that I have seen at conventions like Dragoncon.

It can become an obsession for some and there is, like everything, a dark side to costuming. Addiction is easy when it comes to costuming, and collecting in general, so one has to put ones-self in check and make sure you dont bring financial ruin upon yourself just to afford another helmet for your Boba Fett collection.

Also, If you aren’t careful and plan your costume right, it can be an absolute nightmare and quite dangerous. Heat is an issue in planning , so keep hydrated and stay indoors if your doing the whole Chewbacca or Furries thing. Also make sure you are able to use the bathroom easily. There’s nothing worse than having to remove your entire costume in the public restroom, just to take a pee.

Well I’d love to hear comments and stories about your costume art and obsession. Until next time….
